The stud welding hand tool precisely positions weld or shear studs, controlling lift and plunge during installation. Connected to the welding converter via weld and control cables, the converter/rectifier transforms mains input power into weld current to affix the stud or shear connector.
This drawn arc process utilizes specially formed stud types. Studs over 6mm include a flux ball for arc initiation, aiding fluidity, deoxidizing molten material, reducing porosity, and ensuring full penetration. A ceramic ferrule contains the weld arc and heat.
Full penetration requires adequate fusion of shear stud and parent material, guided by specifications like BCSA code of practice and EN ISO 14555:2014.
Thru Deck stud welding demands unpainted, clean upper flanges. Surfaces free from weldable primer, galvanizing, rust, or dirt are essential. Avoid welding through reinforcement bar or mesh to prevent short-circuit risks.
Welding should follow decking installation promptly to maintain weld quality. Ensure interconnected beams, forming a continuous earth loop for a welding circuit within 10 meters of the converter.
Avoid stud welding in inclement weather or below freezing temperatures. Employ proper PPE and air-fed respirators; failure to use issued PPE may result in disciplinary action.
Thru Deck stud welding in the PA position (Downhand position only) undergoes visual examination for weld collar uniformity and stud location, length, and angle.
Ring tests, tapping the shear connector head with a 0.9kg to 2kg hammer, serve as a production test for static loads. Bend testing, subjecting studs to a 30⁰ angle, checks chosen parameters. Bending angle up to 30⁰ does not significantly reduce shear capacity.
Production surveillance during shear connector installation includes these tests, with additional ones as per contract requirements. Record-keeping is vital.
